"Henry Sidgwick is the greatest of the classical utilitarians, far superior to Bentham or Mill in the care with which he examines issues in moral philosophy. But The Methods of Ethics is a big book, and it used to be heavy to carry around. No longer - now I have not only The Methods, but
Sidgwick's complete works literally at my fingertip - they are on my laptop, in an easily searchable form, and go with me, wherever I go. Thanks, Bart Schultz and InteLex!" Prof.

"I now recognize that I shall be making constant use of the Past Masters version of the
Hardy letters edition as I proceed with the editing of that edition's supplementary volume. Indeed, I have become much more aware--from this experience and from discussions with other scholars whose work I respect--of the extent to which serious scholarship in the humanities is becoming increasingly desk-bound and electronically dependent, and will become ever more so as fully dependable and readily
referenced sources become increasingly available.
What is so attractive about the Past Masters series from a scholarly viewpoint, and indeed from the viewpoint of all its potential users, is precisely its absolute dependence on the highly accurate reproduction of existing works of authoritative scholarship whose quality and importance has already been established and whose reference systems (for citation purposes) are straightforward and immediately
recognisable."

"[InteLex] Past Masters databases, on the other hand, include the text of highly-respected, complete, scholarly editions and translations, a strong search engine capable of searching across texts, and features such as textual notes and pagination. These factors, along with the reasonable pricing, makes [InteLex] Past Masters titles appealing to a broad user spectrum, from casual readers and undergraduates searching for an online version of a text to scholars performing high-level research.

"Incidentally, your list is looking very impressive. I bought
Peirce's Collected Papers several years ago when your list was quite
modest...
Surely electronic editions are the wave of the future. They are so easy to search, so compact and portable, and so much cheaper than paper. To insist on bound paper in the
21st century seems to me rather like insisting on scriptorium produced editions on vellum in the 16th century -- after Gutenberg. However, I rather suspect that scholars probably did so insist for several decades anyway."

"Today's
scholars in the humanities are well aware of the headaches involved in
cybercitations, as well as the more traditional, perennial
difficulties of securing the most authoritative edition of relevant
texts. If 'The Romantic Age' [one
of 26 databases presently included in the 'English
Letters' collection] is any indication, then the company is on the
cutting edge of efforts to alleviate these scholarly worries once and
for all... InteLex goes to unusual lengths to guarantee editorial and
technical accuracy and excellence.
The Bottom Line:
The Romantic Age is a useful research tool implemented with superior
service and commitment. Highly recommended for academic libraries and
research libraries serving literary scholarship."

"The publication of
John Dewey's correspondence is a landmark event for American philosophy. Reading a long stretch of letters in their chronological order is addictive and enlightening! For the researcher with a deadline, Intelex's
Folio VIEWS search engine is intuitively simple yet powerful enough to quickly locate relevant terms and passages, using phrase, proximity, and Boolean search methods. This treasure of many thousands of letters, including hundreds from Dewey's friends, colleagues, and acquaintances, are an essential resource for studying an important era in America's intellectual life. From the arcane to the profound -- and even the humorous -- these letters provide a rare opportunity to gain insights into Dewey's life and thought, his contributions to his profession and the many political causes he championed, and his central role in democracy's progress"

"The
Dewey collection is amazing. The software is beautiful and the indexing is so much better than one would find in any other kind of search, paper or otherwise. But more than that, the collection has done something that Dewey himself could never quite do: make Dewey accessible for a general audience. Don't get me wrong: Dewey is still in print. But while Dewey's works are thoughtful and provocative, and a few people still find extra copies of Dewey's books (with their original titles) in dusty old bookstores, the truth is that Dewey has become a scholar's playground, with the over 20,000
pages of letters, books and essays arranged in a way that only a scholar could love. The CD-ROM fixes all that. This is a collection that anyone who studies America, its philosophy, its history, its institutions, or its politics will love. The Dewey collection is the key to unlock the ideas of a brilliant scholar whose work transformed not only how Americans think but also how they organize their society. It is fun, fascinating, user-friendly, and revealing. You would have to study Dewey for an entire career to gain the kind of global perspective that this volume offers, but the feel of the CD-ROM isn't grizzled or worn. Rather, you feel as though Dewey was meant for anyone. And I am quite sure that Dewey would have loved the incredible yet comfortable rigor of the cross-referencing and indexing of this miracle of digital scholarship."

"In the world of scholarly electronic publishing, InteLex continues to get it right, as they have from the beginning: working closely with scholarly editors, selecting high-quality editions to digitize, marking them up carefully and well according to international standards, and permitting libraries either to rent them over the Internet or to purchase, own and locally house them, as we do print editions--all at reasonable prices. I recommend InteLex databases to libraries wholeheartedly, not only because they are superior publications and a good deal, but also because InteLex is the kind of electronic publisher that academic libraries need most in the 21st

"the
[Peirce: Collected Papers] arrived promptly and I am delighted with the product, as well as the price. Amazon in the U.K. are selling the eight volumes (in book form) for £750 plus p&p, so the $170, inc. p&p, I paid for the database is excellent value in comparison. "First, and most obviously, the
Hobbes database lives in my computer on my hard disk along with about four other Past Masters collections. I can call them up in about 30 seconds and they save me about five feet of scarce shelf space. It
is often quicker to search for a reference this way than to get up and get a text. Besides, I can then highlight a passage and transfer it to a paper or to my lecture notes and know that it is copied correctly. I can also copy a passage from an obscure text and hand it out to students, so that their reading is less limited by what they can afford. Granted they can go to the library and do this themselves, but I find that class discussion goes better if they have the text in front of them.
Second, I have used the search mechanism incorporated with the disk, to find evidence of Hobbes's debt to other writers--something he almost never admits. In working with Sir Walter Raleigh, I noted that Raleigh talks about several different kinds of war. Typing Raleigh's terms into the search mechanism and doing Boolean-style search, I was able to find a single paragraph in a rather unlikely part of Hobbes's writings that contains most of Raleigh's key terms. Furthermore, they were used by Hobbes in the same way Raleigh used them. This seems to me to be strong evidence that Raleigh was a source for Hobbes in this case. Rereading the massive amounts of Hobbes necessary to find this one paragraph would be an impossible task. The entire search using the database took about six minutes.
Finally, I have used the database to disprove to my satisfaction the claim that Hobbes is the author of the so-called Short Tract. The tract is only about twelve pages long, too short for a word print analysis. However it does contain a number of distinctive terms. I made a list of those terms (admittedly a set of subjective judgments) and searched the Hobbes database for them, calling up each instance with about 30 words on each side so as to get the context in which the term was used. It turns out that Hobbes either didn't use most of these terms or used them in a different way. For one term alone this would
mean little, but if this is true for a number of terms, it becomes significant. Few writers change the way they use a whole group technical terms abruptly. These differences from Hobbes's known writings of the same period cast doubt on the claim that the anonymous tract is by Hobbes. The tract may still be important, but it may not be by Hobbes. As far as using the Past Masters database goes, it does not matter whether or not I am right about the Short Tract. What does matter is that this is a powerful way to use this material, even if it must be carefully done and even if the conclusions are only probable and never utterly certain.
In short, I really like using your collections; I only wish that all the works of all these philosophers were always available, and I wish that all the works of many other figures, major and minor, were also available.

"We
will be sending you an order for the Wittgenstein:
Nachlass shortly, and this afternoon seems like a good time to tell you
how much we appreciate the excellent work you are doing in terms of publishing electronic
texts in the field of philosophy.
From a faculty and intellectual perspective, your list includes the best editions of the
most important philosophers. I think you must have been one of the first companies
publishing electronic texts to recognize the importance of choosing the right edition of a
work. Certainly, you have done a consistently better job in this area than anyone else.
Indeed, we have used your emphasis on choosing appropriate editions as a model in our own
digitization project, "Documenting the American South."
From a library perspective, you have moved to open standards, particularly the ISO
standard for TEI/SGML, which means that your texts are encoded to the highest standards,
and we can run the texts we purchase from you on any software platform.
You have also been very reasonable with your license agreements and easy to work with and
obliging throughout the identification, evaluation, selection, and acquisition process.
And you have always done exactly what you said you would do. In all these areas you are
quite simply the best in the business. We have enjoyed working with you, and look forward

"This tool will provide a fast and reliable response to a variety
of questions: Suppose you wish to find out if and when St. Thomas cites a particular
Scripture passage (such as Romans 1:19 or Exodus 3:14). Although each
translator has his own way of abbreviating the titles of books in the bible, it is
possible, with some ingenuity, to find out where such passages are cited.
Suppose you want to identify the passage in De Malo in which St. Thomas discusses
the distinction between negation and privation.
Suppose you want to find out what St. Thomas has to say about the nature of duties and
deacons.
Suppose you want to find out where St. Thomas comments on the relationship between
substance and form.
I have been doing research on St. Thomas's views regarding the knowledge that humans are
able to have of God; a locus classicus for this discussion is Summa
Theologica Part I, question 12. The Past Masters program allowed me to search the
English translations for all passages in which relevant expressions such as "natural
desire/naturally desire," "face-to-face," "beatific vision,"
"knowledge of God, " and "clean/pure of heart" occur. I was also able
to search the database for locations in which St. Thomas cites S.T. I q. 12.
This is an outstanding tool both for Thomistic scholars and for those studying the
writings of St. Thomas Aquinas for the first time. Learning to use the program is easy;
the documentation is clear and well organized; the program comes with a very handy help
menu."

"There can be no doubt that the CD-ROM version of John Dewey, The Collected Works will provide a
vital new stimulus to further Dewey scholarship. The ease of access it provides
facilitates a qualitative difference in speed and dexterity of scholarly searches and
comparisons of the full range of the marvelous thirty-seven volumes of text provided by
Southern Illinois University Press and the long years of work of the editors at the Center
for Dewey Studies.
The New Folio VIEWS software is a great improvement over what I had heretofore seen, and
since there are other electronic editions of philosophical works available from the same
firm, or in production (including Peirce's
Collected Papers and the emerging
Santayana edition), the range of potential comparisons and searches can and will be
vastly expanded. No serious Dewey scholar will want to be without this electronic edition
. . ."

"Sidgwick's correspondence with Henry
Graham Dakyns reveals more about the thinking leading up to The Methods of Ethics
than any other available material. Schultz has now made accessible hitherto unused
material that should greatly increase our understanding of the core of Sidgwick's
thought."
