Is a POIESIS subscription required to access particular journals?

Yes. Searching and browsing of anything other than the tables of contents requires a POIESIS subscription. We are currently providing free access to browse and search the tables of contents of the issues included in POIESIS. Temporary access can be provided to the full service for individuals who are in a position to evaluate the service for their school, or for publishers who would like to include their journals and would like to try out the service. Free trials are available for institutions.

Can we subscribe to the electronic version of particular journals without a POEISIS subscription?

No. Full text access to specific journals is only allowed in combination with a POIESIS subscription.

The POIESIS subscription establishes a baseline of revenue to support the continuing conversion of back issues to electronic format, and pay for server hardware, software, and maintenance as well as the personnel necessary to acquire, convert, markup and maintain the files from the various journals.

Can we cancel journal subscriptions and reduce our costs by subscribing to POIESIS?

No. POIESIS is fundamentally a research tool and is not intended as a substitute for journal subscriptions. Unrestricted full-text access to any journal in the project is only provided if a library also subscribes to that journal. Most of the journals in POIESIS are owned by academic societies that depend entirely on their journal's revenue to support other activities. These small publishers generally do not have the resources or infrastructure to provide electronic access to their journals, and POIESIS offers a way for these publishers to provide such access without cost or financial risk. POIESIS assumes all of the costs of digitization, markup and delivery of these diverse titles, and in many cases electronic access would not otherwise be feasible. POIESIS increases accessibility to this journal content, offering convenient and complete search functionality for all available issues. The problem of how to provide electronic access to society based journals is particularly acute in philosophy, since well over 70% of the 1,000+ philosophy journals world-wide are published by scholarly societies or similar academic entities. Librarians should also be aware that most philosophy journals, including the very best titles, are also relatively inexpensive, with institutional subscription prices under $100.

How is POIESIS different than JSTOR?

POIESIS offers searchable access to the full text of current and recent issues of dozens of philosophy journals. JSTOR offers coverage of all back issues of journals in various disciplines, including several philosophy journals. While back issues of some philosophy journals are available in POIESIS, the focus of the project is on current and recent issues. POIESIS only offers full text access to back issues that are not available from JSTOR or any other vendor. For those journals participating in both JSTOR and POIESIS (such as The Philosophical Review and Philosophy & Phenomenological Research), JSTOR provides access to all back issues while POIESIS offers coverage of current and recent issues of these journals.

How is POIESIS different than Philosopher's Index?

POIESIS is a full text collection of philosophy journals offering searchable access to the complete content of over 2,200 issues and 330,000 pages of text from several dozen titles. Philosopher's Index is a bibliographic database offering indexed data on articles from approximately 300 journals, as well listings for book reviews, contributions to anthologies, and some monographs. POIESIS users can search every word in each article, book review, and review essay, as well as all footnotes, bibliographies, and tables of contents of each available issue. Philosopher's Index users can search by journal title, article title, author, date, assigned keywords, and available abstracts of each indexed item. It does not offer full text searching.

How does POIESIS authenticate the identity of authorized users?

We use IP (Internet Protocol) number range to identify authorized users at subscribing institutions to facilitate campus-wide access. Faculty, staff and students at subscribing institutions therefore do not need a user name or password to use the database.

Are there plans for individual subscriptions?

There are no immediate plans, but we would like to offer low cost subscriptions to individuals. We continue to envisige economic models that protect the subscription revenues of the participating journals and that also make economic sense for the individual and for POIESIS. Please let us know if you have interest in this by sending us a registration form.

Will more journals be added to POIESIS in 2007?

Yes. In 2006-2007 we have expanded the project with current and recent issues of the following titles:

The American Journal of Semiotics
Ancient Philosophy
Bowling Green Studies in Applied Philosophy
Bradley Studies
Faith and Philosophy
The Harvard Review of Philosophy
International Corporate Responsibility Series

Philosophy and History
Radical Philosophy Review of Books
Radical Philosophy Today
Philosophical Studies

Will other content be added to POIESIS?

Yes, serial publications such as Bowling Green Studies in Applied Philosophy, International Corporate Responsibility Series, Proceedings of the Twentieth World Congress of Philosophy, Radical Philosophy Today, The Ruffin Series in Business Ethics and Social Philosophy Today are being added to the project.

We are also adding the full text of a number of discontinued philosophy journals to make their content more widely accessible. These titles include

Can other electronic resources be linked to POIESIS?

Yes, POIESIS implemented OpenURL link processing. The OpenURL standard is a syntax for describing an information resource that exists in a web-based environment. Links that follow the OpenURL standard are considered “context-sensitive”. These links can direct users to information resources, such as full-text repositories or library catalogs, to which they (or their institutions) have access. The OpenURL standard has been implemented widely in the scholarly information industry. For more information, visit the Poiesis OpenUrl Information page.
