Orientation: The Monist publishes
thematic issues on particular philosophical topics and each
issue is a collected anthology
of continuing
interest. It is one of oldest philosophy journals in the
world, established in 1888 as a quarterly journal of the
philosophy of science. Its first editor was Paul Carus, who
received his Ph.D. in philosophy and classical philology
from the University of Tübingen in 1876. Carus was also
the editor of The Open Court magazine and editor of the Open
Court Publishing Company until his death in 1919. Publication
of The Monist was suspended in 1936 and since its revival
in 1962 the journal has achieved international recognition
as one of leading philosophical journals in the English language.
